Director of Medicinal Chemistry

Overview

Q-State Biosciences is seeking a highly motivated Director of Medicinal Chemistry to combine scientific decision-making and organizational leadership, and to advance small molecule and ASO drug discovery projects from hit identification through development candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary drug discovery project in a fast-paced, results-driven biotech environment
  • Leads drug discovery project through collaboration with a cross-functional team to drive all aspect of the project, including scientific decisions and budgetary aspects
  • Serve as chemistry lead on the internal project team and drive experimental synthetic compound design, data analysis, and deliver a clearly articulated summary to management
  • Align project goals with the expectations of leadership and corporate goals
  • Drive medicinal chemistry efforts on multiple projects in pain and/or rare genetic disease therapeutic area  
  • Design, implement and execute medicinal chemistry strategies with a heavy emphasis on using external CROs
  • Supervise external US or overseas CRO-based chemists to deliver compounds for biological evaluation
  • Provide strategic, scientific, and managerial leadership in an outsourced medicinal chemistry environment
  • Plan and execute on resource allocation to achieve project goals
  • Oversee compound management aspects of medicinal chemistry projects
  • Collaborate effectively with the leadership team and cross-functional teams
  • Contribute to the overall scientific strategy and corporate vision

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry
  • 10+ years of drug discovery experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, with a strong track record of success in delivering clinical candidates
  • Broad background in all aspects of drug discovery, with a working knowledge of ADME/PK, target coverage, pharmacology, physicochemical property-driven optimization, and computational chemistry
  • A record of success in structure-based and property-based drug design of clinical candidates
  • A thought leader in the drug discovery scientific community
  • An effective leader of multidisciplinary drug discovery teams with experience in hit identification to development candidate
  • Flexibility to quickly accommodate rapidly changing priorities and achieve aggressively deadlines
  • Significant experience in leading synthetic chemistry CRO activities
  • A leader with strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and managerial expertise who motivates and inspires others to achieve the corporate and project scientific objectives
  • Works with the leadership team to ensure strategic plans align with corporate goals and long-term company plans  
  • Excellent organizational skills as an individual contributor and in leading or co-leading multidisciplinary drug discovery project teams are desired  
  • Organized, results-driven, detail-oriented, independently motivated, and able to multi-task  
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Strong presentation skills, capable of conveying technical and project information in a clear manner

Additional Qualifications Desired

  • Experience with CMC/early development is a plus
  • Expertise in oligo and nucleic acid chemistry is a plus
